Reality check

A demo shows what may be possible. These points help judge whether the product fits day-to-day use.

Works well when
  • Simulation, control, perception and repeatable experiments
  • Teams that can manage dependencies and hardware interfaces
  • Prototyping before committing to a physical deployment
What to check
  • Supported hardware, GPU requirements and version compatibility
  • Documentation, examples and community response
  • How simulation results transfer to the real robot
Not a magic solution
  • A guarantee that simulation equals a production cell
  • A replacement for safety validation on hardware
  • A low-maintenance toolchain without version ownership

About

MuJoCo Playground is an Apache-2.0 robot-learning environment library covering locomotion and manipulation. Training supports MuJoCo MJX/JAX and MuJoCo Warp; vision environments use the MJWarp Batch Renderer. Researchers install it locally with suitable GPU dependencies. It is neither a physical robot nor a hosted training service. Policies transferred to hardware still require task-specific validation.

What it solves

MuJoCo Playground provides GPU-accelerated environments for robot-learning research and sim-to-real experiments, built on MuJoCo MJX.

Best for

  • Researchers and developers training locomotion or manipulation policies.
  • Teams already using Python, JAX and reproducible experiment workflows.
  • Prototyping a policy in simulation before testing it on a physical robot.

Watch out

  • It is a simulation and research framework, not a ready-to-deploy robot controller.
  • Sim-to-real transfer still needs calibration, sensing and safety validation.
  • GPU, JAX and CUDA setup can be a meaningful onboarding cost for beginners.

What to verify before choosing

  • The current source install requires Python 3.10 or later; check your JAX/CUDA stack first.
  • Confirm that the task you need is covered by the available locomotion, manipulation or vision environments.
  • Record simulator version, random seeds and hardware when comparing experiments.
